May Days bring much to look forward to around Oakland
As the days get longer and spring turns to summer, it seems that the calendar is getting busier to take advantage of the amazing weather we have here in Oakland. This month we’ve found a bunch of great events where you can enjoy some delicious food while supporting some great causes, hear some new artists emerging from the local music scene, or finally find out how much Aunt Bea’s precious antique she left you is really worth. And if you’re into the burgeoning street food movement, you’re not going to want to skip out on Oakland’s first annual Battle of the Taco Trucks.
Friday, May 6th starting at 6:00 pm: Five Star Night to Support Alameda County Meals on Wheels
Help support the great work feeding the hungry that the Alameda County’s Meals on Wheels programs provide by attending their dinner gala. The 24th annual fundraiser will take place at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Oakland and helps to fund Meals on Wheels’ mission of providing food to those less fortunate. With a stellar menu featuring the finest food from Oakland favorites such as Plum, Ozumo and Pizzaiolo, this dinner is going to be a memorable evening in support of a great organization. Saturday, May 7th starting at 7:00 pm: First Annual Oakland Battle of the Taco Trucks
Get your Cinco de Mayo on at what is sure to become an annual favorite of anyone with an appetite or who has ever had an appetite. Taco trucks from across the East Bay will be on hand at the Oakland Convention Center serving up the finest in Mexican cuisine available on four tires. Be sure to check out the tequila tasting garden on site too. With great food, high energy music and dancing, and state of the art sound and lighting systems, this is shaping up to be a fiesta not to be missed. Thursday, May 12th from 6:30 until 8:30 pm: Antiques Roadshow comes to Oakland
Spring is here and it is time to clean out those closets and get organized. To help you distinguish between priceless family heirloom and worthless clutter, the folks from Antiques Roadshow are coming to town and are ready to cast their eagle eye upon your stuff. The Harvey Clars Auction Gallery in Oakland is hosting an appraisal clinic where experts in the field will be available to assess and give estimates on two items per person. Sunday, May 15th from 3:00 until 6:00 pm: Fiesta Latina!
Combining live music, flavorful food and salsa dancing, Fiesta Latina 2011 is a benefit for the life-saving work in fighting cancer conducted by the Oakland-based group Prevention International: No Cervical Cancer. Working across the continents in Latin America, Africa and Asia, the good folks at Prevention International are fighting for women’s lives by helping to end entirely preventable cervical cancer. Your admission helps support this worthy local organization and gets you access to some amazing live entertainment and food. The event will be held at the Lakeside Park Garden Center at Lake Merritt and tickets are available at the event website.
Saturday, May 21st from 2:00 until 4:00 pm: Who’s Got Soul?
KBLX’s talent search concludes with the finale concert at Jack London Square. Hear great new emerging local artists battle each other for a coveted opening act spot for KBLX’s Stone Soul Concert on May 29th. Information about the talent contest and the concerts are available at KBLX’s website.
Sunday, May 22nd from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm: DooF-a-Palooza – A Family Food Festival
For once in your life, you are going to be encouraged to play with your food. When was the last time you got to shoot meatballs out of a catapult into a vat of tomato sauce? DooF-a-Palooza is a free admission, table to source, food educational experience that includes contests, games, entertainment and fun hands-on activities for the entire family. Learn about food from purveyors and chefs directly while having a blast and enjoying Jack London Square. Doof (food backwards) makes good food fun.
